FarmSafe in the Classroom

Beta Version (Nov. 21, 2024):

Four FarmSafe in the Classroom activities, detailed below, have been developed for beta testing. Provide feedback and suggestions to cph-greatplainscenter@uiowa.edu, using the subject line “FarmSafe in the Classroom.”

The FarmSafe Podcast is a place where ag workers and public health experts share first-hand stories and real-life tips for making safer and healthier decisions on the farm.

The FarmSafe in the Classroom project takes these recordings and makes classroom-ready activities to highlight key age-appropriate messages from the podcast episodes with students.

Assignments range from simple quizzes to advanced activities that can focus on different skill development, mapping to educational competencies needed for your students.  Tasks to complete these assignments might require:

• Group discussion, reaching consensus, and summarizing results,
• Researching information and preparing a written summary, or
• Generating a tool (poster, brochure, handout) to share safety message regarding a hazard discussed.

Competencies

For each assignment, we have identified competencies matching back to Common Career Technical Core (CCTC), Common Core Standards for English Language Arts both Reading (RSL) and Writing (WSL) cores.  In addition, we mapped each activity to the 2024 National Council for Ag Education’s Content standards for Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (AFNR) programs.  Our mapping details these competencies in these tables.

Model Farm

Several of our activities focus on integrating an activity into a “model farm” that the class is working with as a semester-long project.  This allows students to make a coherent set of materials and generate budgets to comply with safety best-practices across time, helping to integrate information learned over time.  This Model Farm Project pdf contains details on how to set up the Model Farm for multiple activities over time.
