Field Activities
An important initiative within the outreach program is to put health and safety information directly into the hands of those who need it most. During 2023, we emphasized direct and personal contact with agricultural producers on the topics of hearing loss prevention, the use of gas monitors in agricultural settings, skin cancer prevention, and PPE selection for farm work. This included:
- Training farm families on which farm tasks require hearing protection and how to properly insert ear plugs.
- Fit testing a variety of hearing protection devices (earplugs and earmuffs) to show individuals which one worked best for protecting their hearing.
- Teaching farm youth and youth from rural communities about protecting their skin when working (and playing) in the sun.
- Comparing a variety of hydrogen sulfide monitors on the market today and teaching them how to use and maintain a wearable gas monitor.
- Discussing producers’ response to high levels of hydrogen sulfide when wearing a gas monitor.
- Promoting GPCAH’s educational offerings with Extension Educators
- Developing and piloting a new tool, Flat Farmers, to reinforce best practices for PPE selection.
