SUN EXPOSURE & SKIN CANCER PREVENTION

Farmers and ranchers are at greater risk of developing skin cancer than the average American because they are exposed to 2-3 times as much UV radiation as indoor workers.  Protect your skin by using broad spectrum sunscreen, wearing sunglasses, long sleeve shirt and pants, and a wide-brim hat.  Also, be aware that some medications can increase your sensitivity to the sun.

Unit 3. Sun Safety

This unit on Sun Safety assembles information to identify hazards and prevention tips for those working outdoors.  We cover Heat Illness in its own unit, but additional concerns of sun exposure are covered in this chapter.  Since farmers commonly ask about skin discolorations when visiting a health care provider, this chapter provides important descriptions that have images in the supporting materials for you to use and share.  Our hope is that we can increase early detection of skin cancers among farmers and, equally important, that we can encourage health protective behaviors that reduce exposures and increase screening for farmers to improve health outcomes.  We have incorporated answers to many questions farmers have about sun safety to help you prepare for conversations with farmers on this issue.

Listen to the audio lessons from Unit 3 of Ag Health 101, or view the Unit Summary pages on Sun Safety, for more information on this topic.
